Types Of Trucks

The severity of injuries and property damage experienced by accident victims can be a direct result of the type of truck involved in the collision. Specific types of trucks are often more prone to a particular type of accident than others. Commercial vehicles are used for a variety of reasons and each individual reason can be the cause of a different type of crash. Additionally, there can be many different individuals or entities at-fault in an accident, depending on the type of truck involved.

The Different Types Of Large Commercial Vehicles

The following types of trucks are typically involved in Connecticut truck injury claims:

A panel truck is a windowless cargo van that is often used in the delivery of consumer conveniences.

Also known as a tractor-trailer, big rig or 18-wheeler, a semi-truck is an articulated vehicle with a towing engine (called the tractor) and a trailer that carries the freight. These types of trucks are the most commonly used vehicles in the shipping industry. Semi-trailers can often have control issues due in part to the two-part nature of their design. Many accidents can occur when the trailer is traveling at a different speed than the tractor, resulting in a jackknife accident.

Flatbed trucks are characterized by their entirely flat, level bodies with no sides or roof. These types of trucks allow for the quick and easy loading of goods. They are often used to transport very heavy and durable loads, like construction equipment, that are not vulnerable to rain. Flatbed trucks are also used to transport oddly-sized or shaped loads that require more space than is available in a trailer with a closed body.

Tanker trucks are designed to transport almost any kind of cargo, including liquids, dry bulk cargo or gasses. The largest type of tanker truck is similar in appearance and functionality to a railroad tank car. There are many different types of tanker trucks due to the wide variety of liquids that require transportation. Tanker trucks can be insulated or non-insulated; pressurized or non-pressurized, and can be designed for single or multiple loads.

Dump trucks are typically used in the construction industry for the transportation of loose material, like sand, dirt or gravel. Also known as a production truck, they are used to transport garbage to landfills, as well. Dump trucks are equipped with a hydraulically-operated, open-box bed hinged at the rear. The front of the bed can be lifted to allow the contents to be deposited (or dumped) on the ground behind the truck.

Garbage trucks, also known as waste collection vehicles (WCV), are specially designed to pick up smaller quantities of waste curbside and haul it to landfills and other recycling or treatment facilities.
