Types Of Motorcycles

Today, motorcycles are more specialized than ever. There are several different types of motorcycles to choose from. Some motorcycles are more suited to a particular rider than another; it all depends on the purpose of purchasing a bike. It is important to be well-informed before purchasing a motorcycle. Riders should know the capabilities of their bike and how to perform routine maintenance on their vehicle in order to remain safe while on Connecticut roads and highways.

What Are The Categories Of Motorcycles?

According to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, motorcycles can be separated into three different categories: street bikes, dual-purpose bikes and off-road bikes. Beyond these three categories, bikes can be separated into several different subcategories.

  • Street Bikes: These are especially designed to be driven on paved roads. This type of bike has the widest variety of body styles available.
  • Touring Bikes: This type of motorcycle is the biggest out of all types of bikes. They often come equipped with accessories such as windscreens and large storage compartments. Touring motorcycles often have bigger gas tanks that allow motorcyclists to travel long distances between fueling up.
  • Cruisers: A cruiser motorcycle is most often associated with custom bikes and recognizable brands, like Harley Davidson. The design of a cruiser situates a rider in a low position with arms outstretched to reach the handlebars, making the bike much more difficult to handle than the average motorcycle.
  • Sport Motorcycles: These types of motorcycles have the ability to reach high speeds in very little time and distance. They are also very easy to handle and brake; however, they are not known for comfort or for fuel-efficiency.
  • Standard Bikes: A standard motorcycle is a very basic street bike. They do not come with many accessories and are often a good choice for a beginner.
  • Scooters: Scooters have smaller engines than other bikes and are not capable of achieving high speeds. Scooters are often the best choice for someone who is seeking maximum fuel efficiency for getting around town conveniently.
  • Dual-Purpose Motorcycles: A dual-purpose bike is designed for the rider who wishes to use his or her bike off-road but also has some of the necessary safety features necessary to ride the bike on the street. These types of bikes look like off-roaders, but they come equipped with horns, headlights, turn signals and side-view mirrors that make them legal to ride on the road.
  • Off-Road Bikes: These bikes are designed for those who will be riding their motorcycle off of paved streets and highways.
