Bridgeport – Sentence After Hit-And-Run Incident

A hit-and-run suspect was sentenced to prison in Bridgeport yesterday.

28-year-old Pearak Pha of Capitol Avenue was sentenced in connection to a June 25, 2016 incident where he fled an accident scene after hitting a pedestrian with his vehicle. On that day, 81-year-old Gaspar Esteves was standing outside his pickup truck parked on Arlington Street when Pha, driving a Volkswagen sedan, hit him. Esteves sustained serious injuries in the incident and was immediately brought to St. Vincent’s Medical Center by emergency responders. He was later pronounced dead. Pha, instead of staying, fled the accident scene and was able to elude arrest for several months. In September 2016, local police were on a drug raid and found evidence of the suspect’s vehicle — it was later found in a driveway on Taft Avenue. This subsequently led to the arrest of Pha leading up to yesterday’s court judgment.

This case highlights many of the circumstances that surround many hit-and-run incidents in the state. It’s important to note that in situations where we or our loved ones are injured, we would have various options we can discuss with our legal counsel, including filing for damages/compensation.

New Haven – Hit-And-Run Suspect Sentenced

A suspect who hit two pedestrians in New Haven last April has just been sentenced to 45 days in jail.

The incident occurred at the intersection of Elm and High Streets back on April 15. 21-year-old Anthony Abate was driving his car in the area when he hit two girls. Abate had the green light at the time of the accident. According to witnesses, the victims were waved by another motorist to cross the road even though the stop sign just turned green. Abate did not notice this and subsequently hit the victims, causing injuries in the process. Court records showed that he panicked immediately after and fled the scene, instead of staying to assist the victims or to wait for authorities to arrive. He was arrested the same day and charged soon after.

The circumstances surrounding this case are complicated as the suspect was not necessarily at fault as far as obeying traffic signs is concerned. That said, instances of hit-and-run strengthen cases against suspects, and this example simply highlights the diligence that law enforcement members exhibit when dealing with any road-related incident.

Hamden – Damages Filed In Pedestrian Incident

A damage claim has just been filed by the husband of a pedestrian crash victim in Hamden.

Edward Wilczynski from North Haven just filed a case in connection to a July 28, 2018 road incident that killed his wife, 50-year-old Kristin Wilczynski. The accident occurred on Dixwell Avenue, near its intersection with Old Dixwell Avenue. Wilczynski was trying to cross the road when she was hit by a vehicle driven by then 28-year-old Courtney Bothwell, also from North Haven. Wilczynski sustained serious injuries in the crash and was brought to Yale-New Haven hospital by EMS crews, but died soon after. Bothwell was arrested last January and charged with negligent homicide, among other charges. According to police reports, Bothwell claimed she looked away from the road to tend to a puppy that was inside her vehicle when the crash happened. Edward Wilczynski’s recent filing has cited reckless and negligent behavior as factors that initiated the crash. The case is still ongoing.

This recent filing highlights just one example of various legal avenues victims of road incidents have at their disposal when involved in these situations. Taking note of these incidents is important because if we or our loved ones are ever involved in similar cases, we will be aware of our options.
