Bridgeport Pedestrian In Serious Condition After Being Struck By Vehicle

A pedestrian in Bridgeport was struck by a vehicle and suffered life-threatening injuries on Thursday. The man, 47-year-old Henry Cartagena, was walking along the sidewalk near the intersection of Barnum Avenue and Elizabeth Street, when two vehicles collided at the intersection. The impact caused a Nissan minivan to veer off the road and onto the sidewalk, striking Cartagena.

The driver of the minivan, 68-year-old Bridgeport resident Mariano Nieves, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The driver of the truck which struck the minivan, driven by 73-year-old Felix Alberto Ruiz Toledo, refused medical attention at the scene. No charges have been filed in the accident.

Mr. Cartagena was pinned under the vehicle, and the Bridgeport fire department was called to extricate him. The fire department had to extricate the victim by lifting up the van from on top of him. Mr. Cartagena is in serious condition with life-threatening injuries, and was initially taken to Bridgeport Hospital for treatment. He has since been transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Witnesses said that Mr. Cartagena appeared to be coming from or going to work, and had a tool belt around his waist. One witness said that they were able to see Mr. Cartagena trapped under the minivan, and lying in a pool of blood.

Witnesses also told reporters that accidents at the five-way intersection happen all the time, but a malfunctioning traffic light was the cause of the accident on Thursday. Local residents reported that the traffic light had been out for at least two days.

Sometimes, the cause of an accident like this one is not immediately clear. Experienced traffic investigators are usually needed to recreate the events and determine who was at fault. If a traffic light was indeed malfunctioning as was reported by several witnesses, the city of Bridgeport may share some liability for the accident, especially if the city was negligent in failing to repair the light.

If you or a loved one has been harmed by someone else’s negligence, you may be able to recover compensation for your injuries. Call Jonathan Perkins Injury Lawyers at 1-800-PERKINS for a free consultation today.
