Byetta is a common medication prescribed to adults with Type 2 diabetes. It works by stimulating the pancreas to secrete insulin when blood sugars are high in the patient. Byetta is in the incretin mimetic drug class and comes in a pre-filled pen that patients use to inject the medication. Recent studies have shown that there is a strong link between Byetta and pancreatitis or kidney failure. If you or a loved one has used Byetta and has later been diagnosed with either kidney failure or pancreatitis, do not hesitate to contact our Byetta attorneys to see if you may have a legal claim.
Since Byetta entered the market in 2005, over seven million prescriptions have been filled for the drug. Shortly after the medication became available, patients began to complain of adverse side effects. Some of these Byetta side effects include:
- Changes in urine color
- Changes in urine frequency
- Swelling of the face or appendages
- Pain in the back or stomach
In October 2007, the FDA reported that 30 Byetta users had developed acute pancreatitis. Acute pancreatitis is characterized by the sudden inflammation of the pancreas and is often life-threatening.
The FDA reported in August 2008 that six Byetta patients had developed hemorrhagic pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas with bleeding) or necrotizing pancreatitis (when the inflamed pancreas destroys itself). All six patients were hospitalized, and two of the patients died from the pancreatitis. After these injuries and deaths, the FDA advised Byetta’s producer, Amylin Pharmaceuticals, to strengthen their warning labels for the drug.
Byetta Kidney Failure
In 2009, the FDA warned the public that Byetta users may be at risk for altered kidney function, including kidney failure. Between 2005 and 2008, there were 78 reports of kidney problems in Byetta patients. In 62 of those reported incidents, patients experienced renal failure as well.
If you or a loved one have been prescribed Byetta and experienced any of these side effects, be sure to contact your physician immediately as they may be an indication of a serious health condition.
