Connecticut Red Light Accident Attorneys
Approximately 2 million intersection-related motor vehicle crashes occur each year in the United States, according to a study from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration. Even worse, an average of 8,000 traffic fatalities and 700,000 injuries occur annually as a result from intersection accidents. Red-light running has become a serious issue throughout the United States, and more specifically, in the state of Connecticut.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) estimates that there are approximately 165,000 people injuries each year by red-light runners. Unfortunately, it is projected that half of all traffic fatalities due to running a red light are not the red light violator. This indicates that for every two red light collisions, one innocent driver is killed due to the negligence of another.
Red light collisions have been a growing issue in the country for the last several years. A number of propositions have been made to deter the amount of drivers who speed through red lights. However, safety measures such as red light cameras have been met with much controversy in the various states who have utilized them. Nevertheless, all drivers can agree that red-light runners are dangerous and create a serious risk at intersections.
Jonathan Perkins Injury Lawyers has seen hundreds of victims who have suffered due to the negligence of a red-light runner. More often than not, it seems the injured party is the motorist who was simply driving when a light turned green. If you or a loved one has been hurt during a red light accident, our personal injury attorneys are ready to take on your case today.

Causes of Red Light Collisions
The NHTSA reports that up to 97 percent of all drivers believe that red-light runners are a major threat to their safety. In support of this safety threat, studies have indicated that one in three people know someone personally who has been either injured or killed in a red light collision. Red-light runners show signs of some of the most risky, reckless drivers on the roads throughout the nation. In Connecticut, those who run red lights must be considered a serious threat to the safety of all, as their actions have the potential to impact a number of innocent motorists.
While a number of different factors may come into play when a careless driver chooses to run a red light, the following are some of the most common causes of red light collisions:
- Driver is late when approaching the intersection, speeds up to “make the light”
- Frustrated drivers
- Tailgating drivers who cannot see the light change
- Distracted drivers who do not notice the red light
- Texting and driving
While limited data is currently available, texting and driving is one of the fastest growing causes of motor vehicle crashes. As motorists are becoming increasingly distracted while operating their cars, they are unable to pay attention to even the simplest of traffic signs such as intersection traffic lights. While any Connecticut motorist has the potential to run a red light, the following describes a typically seen red light violator:
- Younger driver
- Operating vehicle without any passengers, especially no children
- Driver with less education
- In a rush to work or school, during morning hours
- Likely has been ticketed for running a red light in the past

Red Light Cameras in Connecticut
In the last year, much conversation has circled the idea of implementing red light safety cameras throughout the state of Connecticut. Currently, about 542 communities in the United States are using some kind of red light and/or speed cameras. As of now, Connecticut has no state law regarding the use of cameras to deter the number of red-light runners throughout the state.
The proposed bill would give permission for communities with populations of more than 48,000 to set up red light cameras at a number of intersections. New Haven, CT, in particular, has been amongst the biggest proponents for this safety measure. The New Haven community has taken it upon themselves to push diligently for these cameras, as they believe it would greatly affect the number of red light collisions occurring each year. Recently, Hartford has joined the ranks of New Haven as another large advocate for red light cameras.
Until a bill is passed, Connecticut drivers must exercise caution when crossing any intersection. While red-light runners are clearly the violators of the law, being aware of the potential violation may help to prevent a crash. When red light collisions affect you and your family members, Jonathan Perkins Injury Lawyers is here for you.
