North Stonington – Car Crash: Negligent Homicide Case Filed

Earlier today, a man from Westerly was charged for killing 76-year-old Eugene J. Vincelette, also from Westerly, back in June 2018.

A negligent homicide case was filed against 25-year-old Matthew James Cillino, claiming he wasn’t wearing a seat belt during the incident and was overspeeding. He was also driving with unsafe tires and was caught in possession of drug paraphernalia. In a warrant presented by state police, Cillino was driving on Route 2 crossing North Stonington on June 2, 2018, at 11:43 p.m. when his vehicle suddenly swerved into the opposite lane of the highway. Vincelette, driving a 2009 Hyundai, was hit by Cillino’s 2014 Dodge Ram pickup truck. Vincelette was transported to The William W. Backus Hospital immediately after the crash but eventually died from his injuries.

Cillino was not immediately arrested after the incident. But after a thorough investigation by the police and the physical evidence collected on the scene of the accident, it was determined that Cillino did not exercise due diligence driving that evening. Today’s case filing concluded the investigation.

Our legal rights as motorists are well-protected under Connecticut law. Although in this case the victim, Eugene J. Vincelette, did not survive the accident, the filing of this case is still proof that justice has to be served, and law-enforcement authorities in our state will make sure of that.
