Social Security Disability
We can help if you need to file for Social Security Disability.
You work hard for your money, but when you are injured and can no longer bring home a paycheck, you may need help. When this happens, you may need Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits. These benefits may be available to you if you have an injury, illness, or a mental condition that prevents you from working for at least a year or more.
However, the lengthy application process may not be successful if you do not present a strong case. Even if all the requirements for a social security disability claim are met, there is a possibility of your claim being rejected because you did not file for benefits properly. Of the more than 2 million residents in Connecticut, about 3.7 percent receive some type of Social Security Disability benefits. Most of the initial applications are denied at the first two stages of the application process.
If you are in dire need of SSD or SSI benefits, you are already dealing with enough issues, both medically and financially. Filing a social security disability claim can be an overwhelming task. An experienced SSD lawyer can advise you every step of the way to ensure you receive the benefits that you are entitled to receive. Jonathan Perkins Injury Lawyers has been helping Connecticut residents secure their SSD benefits for years, and we are ready to do the same for you. Why Do I Need a Lawyer?
Over 70% of social security disability claims are rejected on the first try, so it’s crucial that you seek the advice of a social security disability lawyer. A lawyer can help evaluate the strength of your case and help you file your SSD or SSI application. Social Security is more likely to approve an individual who is represented by an attorney than one who is not.
A dedicated lawyer can develop your Social Security disability claim based upon your work history, impairments, and age, as well as articulate how you developed the illness or injury that made you unable to work. A good lawyer can assist in obtaining the medical evidence necessary to support your claim and get it approved.
At the reconsideration and hearing levels, which are the first and second levels of appeals, a lawyer can gather and submit medical evidence, obtain a doctor’s professional opinion, draft a detailed brief, and prepare you for the questions that may be asked by a judge at the hearing. Your attorney can also help guide you through your own testimony at the hearing and cross-examine any medical or vocational experts to bolster your case.
If your claim is at the final stages of appeal in front of the Appeals Council and Federal Court, an attorney can draft legal arguments to demonstrate that your benefits were wrongly denied by Social Security.

Social Security Disability and Supplemental Security Income Compensation
If you are unable to work for a year or longer and live in Connecticut, you may be eligible for either Social Security disability (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Although these are federal programs, the state of Connecticut works with the Social Security Administration to administer some parts of these programs. It also supplements federal SSI payments and sets the Medicaid eligibility guidelines.
SSDI benefits are based on the amount of income on which you have paid social security taxes over your working years. Your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (or AIME) is calculated by the Social Security Administration. This determines your Primary Insurance Amount by calculating 90% of your AIME. The final number is the maximum amount of SSDI benefits that you are entitled to receive.
If you are totally disabled, the federal government may pay up to $710 a month in SSI benefits along with a supplemental payment from the state of Connecticut. If you are living independently, you may also receive up to an additional $168 a month. If you live in a Medicaid facility, you may receive an additional $39 a month. If you and your spouse are both disabled, the amount doubles for each payment.
These rules can be confusing, so the best way to ensure you file your forms correctly and receive the appropriate amount of compensation is to contact Jonathan Perkins Injury Lawyers for help.
