Colchester – Man Awarded Damages In Settlement

A man injured in a July 2017 highway incident in Colchester has been awarded $250,000 in damages.

63-year-old Edward Johnson from Norwich was driving his tractor-trailer west on Route 2 crossing Colchester when a 1999 Ford Ranger pickup truck, driven by Brendan Callis, swerved onto Route 2 from an access road, crashing into his truck in the process. Johnson sustained head and neck injuries in the collision. He was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. Callis was cited for reckless driving and was charged with negligence soon after. Johnson continues to experience pain and requires medication to this day, but is satisfied with the settlement as it allows him to find closure after the traumatic event.

This case highlights the processes and legal avenues aggrieved parties can explore if they are injured in any road-related incident that involves reckless or negligent behavior. It’s important to find closure after these unfortunate events. Legal experts can help those in similar situations find it.

A woman was just sentenced in Southington last Tuesday for stealing a car and injuring its owner.

39-year-old Amy Florian was given a 30-day jail sentence for a plea bargain related to a July 2018 case where she stole another woman’s car after getting into an argument with her. The victim tried to stop the suspect but was subsequently dragged along the road for several feet, sustaining multiple injuries in the process. Catastrophic Injuries: What are they, exactly?

An injury is usually considered catastrophic when it affects a person’s brain or spine, but other types of injuries could also be labeled catastrophic when they result in lengthy hospital stays and difficult recovery. Simply put, catastrophic injuries take much greater tolls on injury victims than other more common injuries.

Whereas people with broken bones will ultimately heal and likely return to their normal lives, people with catastrophic injuries are afforded no such guarantees. Instead, a person who is catastrophically injured likely faces an entire lifetime of challenges and continual issues with their recovery.

For many accident victims with catastrophic injuries, it will be impossible to regain a normal life. Such people will be forced to make significant adjustments to their life, not only in their ability to work but also the activities they partake in for leisure.

Catastrophic injuries often require extensive medical care, and this frequently results in victims incurring many thousands of dollars in medical expenses. Such victims are usually unable to go back to work or even obtain other types of employment because of the nature of their injuries.

Some of the most common catastrophic injuries might include paralysis and spinal cord injuries. Types could include tetraplegia or quadriplegia (paralysis of all limbs), paraplegia (paralysis of the legs and the lower half of the body), hemiplegia (paralysis of one arm and one leg on the same side of the body), triplegia (paralysis of one arm and both legs), or monoplegia (paralysis of one arm or one leg).

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is another common catastrophic injury that could be the result of any blow to a person’s head. Other catastrophic injuries could include internal organ injuries or injuries causing amputation or disfigurement.

Catastrophic injuries are not limited to any one kind of accident. People could suffer catastrophic injuries in car accidents, motorcycle accidents, truck accidents, or workplace accidents, but they could also be the result of dog bites, slip and fall accidents, or medical malpractice.

People who have sustained catastrophic injuries because of another party’s negligence could be entitled to various kinds of compensatory damages if their case is taken to court and they can prove their case by a preponderance of the evidence. Victims could be awarded economic damages for actual costs incurred like medical bills and lost wages as well as noneconomic damages for more subjective kinds of harm such as pain and suffering, loss of consortium, or emotional distress.

The Connecticut attorneys of Jonathan Perkins Injury Lawyers will fight to make sure you get all of the compensation you are entitled to for your catastrophic injuries. Call (203) 397-1283 for a free consultation right now.

A detective was injured when the fleeing vehicle struck the officer at the intersection of Pembroke Street and Crescent Avenue. Emergency crews have since taken the injured person to the hospital for treatment. Authorities have arrested the suspects and will release additional information regarding the incident when appropriate.

The victim in this case was a police officer who showed dedication to his/her duties. That said, injuries sustained by any motorist or pedestrian on the road, particularly by suspects exhibiting reckless or negligent behavior, can be strong grounds for filing compensation/damage claims.
